Bike Table
I train for Ironman and spend a lot of time on long training rides, and I kept running into the same problem: I have a lot of homework and enough free time to spend hours on a bike. So I needed somewhere to put my phone or iPad to do easy work during rides, plus somewhere to put snacks and fuel I could actually reach without stopping. I looked at existing bike tables/racks online, but they were a couple hundred dollars for what was essentially a flat platform with clamps. That price didn't match the complexity of the problem, so I decided to design and build my own instead.
I approached it like any other project — figured out what it actually needed to do (hold an iPad and fuel but not interfere with my controllers or my aero bars), then worked through the design and build until it held up on real rides. I ended up with something that cost a fraction of the commercial options and was built specifically for my bike, instead of a generic fit. It's a small project, but it reflects how I like to approach problems in general. Find your problem, and instead of settling for paying a couple hundred bucks for someone to do it for you, do it better yourself.
