INLINE 4 Engine
Designing an engine has been something I wanted to do for a long time, so I modeled the EVO 888 inline four cylinder block from scratch in SolidWorks working off a drawing. Picking that engine was not random, since it is the one in my own car, and modeling something I drive every day made the whole project feel a lot more concrete. It ended up being the most exciting CAD project I've taken on. An engine block is not a part you can model in one pass. The bores, the deck, the water jackets, the main bearing saddles, and the bolt patterns all have to be placed relative to each other, and getting one of them wrong means everything downstream moves with it. Building it feature by feature forced me to actually think about the order I was working in and what each feature depended on, which is something I had mostly ignored on simpler parts.
What I took away from it had less to do with the engine itself and more to do with how I work in CAD. Reading a drawing carefully enough to translate it into geometry is its own skill, and I spent a lot of time going back to check dimensions I thought I already had right. It also made the function of the part much clearer than looking at pictures ever did, since you cannot model something like a main bearing saddle without understanding what it is holding and why it is shaped that way. That connection between geometry and function is the thing I keep coming back to in every project since.
